Policies & Guidelines:

This is a physician mentorship program jointly supported by the Niagara Regional Campus and Niagara Health, targeted particularly at physicians new in practice, with the goal of supporting them in their career decision making, dealing with personal and professional challenges and helping them understand paths for advancement and leadership.  We hope that this program will connect faculty with each other and to resources for further assistance.  Physicians from across Niagara are welcome to participate, whether or not they have a faculty appointment with McMaster University and the Niagara Regional Campus. Physicians from the community as well as hospital-based physicians serve as mentors.  While this program is designed for physicians new in practice, mid-career and later career physicians are encouraged to participate, ask questions and seek support around issues of personal and professional challenge as well. This program aims to encourage a work culture that embraces mutual support, shared problem-solving, positive role-modelling and cohesiveness of the Niagara physician community.

Strategies for staying current in your field

Stephanie Sanger (sangers@mcmaster.ca)

Interested in obtaining Mainpro+/MOC credits for your event? Please contact Dr. Anjali Kundi (Anjali.Kundi@medportal.ca) at the Niagara Regional Campus for further information on submitting an application.

Please keep in mind this is a lengthy process, and can take up to 8-10 weeks for approval. For more information, review the McMaster CHSE (Continuing Health Sciences Education) Guidebook.

Faculty Development has created a regional campus version of the McMaster Basic Educational Skills Teachers (BEST) certificate program. Similarly to BEST, the McMaster Regional Campus Faculty Teaching Certificate (RCFTC) requires the candidate to participate in a total of 35 hours of combined faculty development and teaching activities. With the context of regional medical education in mind, the required hours and activities would be relevant and accessible to regional faculty members.

The requirements for successful completion of the RCFTC are:

 i. Successful completion of faculty development courses/workshops (online or in person) and corresponding certificates of completion documentation (eg. total of 25 hours minimum)

  • PFD workshops (accredited with academic points and entered into MacFacts by PFD)
  • locally WRC or NRC developed workshops (PFD will review and grant academic points, points will be entered into MacFacts by local administrator)

Other relevant and previously approved faculty development workshops/courses (eg. online modules, educational conferences)

ii: Documented teaching {UGME or PGME or other learners) with relevant evaluations (eg. total of 1O hours minimum)

iii. Teaching Portfolio: the above must be fully completed and documented in a “teaching portfolio” to be submitted and reviewed

Once you have collected these items within your teaching portfolio, write a paragraph about linking learning to practice. In your paragraph explain how the FD programming you did led to improvements and development as a teacher. Once you have completed this, please submit your portfolio to Dr. Anjali Kundi (Anjali.Kundi@medportal.ca).

Once received, we will forward your documents on for approval. If you have any questions about the number of credits you have, please contact your department’s administrator who would be tracking your credits for you or Devon Ainslie (ainslidg@mcmaster.ca).

Please note: All credits received from this year’s retreat and 2018’s retreat will count towards your certificate. Any tutoring you do with MHBS will count towards the 10 credited hours of teaching.
