Through our Service-Learning program, the UGME is able to create opportunities for our students to develop knowledge, skills, and professional identity through the application of academic learning in a community service environment. We are committed to serving and including the people and populations in our regions in all work we do.
Thank you for joining us on the exciting journey ahead!

Nature
Hamilton is the perfect city for those who want access to more nature. Home to more than 100 waterfalls and over 145 km of hiking trails, there’s no shortage of things to explore. Check out the Hamilton Conservation Authority for more information.
While it is nice to curl up with a good book inside in winter, the cold weather doesn’t have to keep you indoors. Take a look at the HCA’s activity page for ideas on how to stay active this winter.
Culture
The Hamilton Philharmonic and Opera Hamilton both have busy seasons featuring internationally known artists. Theatre Aquarius, Hamilton Theatre Inc., Theatre Ancaster, and the Player’s Guild all put on a wide range of successful plays. The University also has a number of music groups and artists-in-residence who perform regularly on campus. The Art Gallery of Hamilton, located near Hamilton Place, is the third-largest gallery in Ontario and has a prestigious collection of works by national and international artists. The McMaster Art Gallery, located in the Mills Library, is one of the most extensive university art collections in Canada. Nearby Brantford is the location of the Six Nations Reserve, where one can visit several museums and displays of native art and culture.

Our local teams include the Tiger-Cats (CFL Football), Bulldogs (OHL Hockey), Forge FC (CPL Soccer), Honey Badgers (CEBL Basketball), and the Cardinals (IBL Baseball).
Hamilton Farmer’s Market
Open year-round, the market is frequented by many students. The market is a large indoor complex where vendors sell various foodstuffs, ranging from fresh produce to cooked meals. Students find the prices both affordable and often negotiable. Hamilton also has many ethnic food stores scattered throughout the city. Discover the Hamilton Farmers’ Market.

Niagara Regional Campus (NRC)
Welcome Address from Dr. Amanda Bell
Welcome to the Niagara Regional Campus. We are pleased to be a distributed medical education site for McMaster University and within our community setting we provide the opportunity to strengthen healthcare through learning and educational innovations. Community and engagement from faculty and learners have been strengths and cornerstones of the culture at the Niagara Regional Campus. These stem from an intrinsic enthusiasm to teach and learn. The Niagara Regional Campus is committed to maintaining this sense of community and engagement in all of our goals.
McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine opened its Niagara Regional Campus in 2008 with several aims: to address the shortage of physicians, to enhance patient care, to improve research and education capacity, and to foster collegial relationships across communities through collaborations with Niagara healthcare leaders. Our commitment to these goals through the years has created a rewarding learning atmosphere for our medical students and enriched the healthcare community in the Niagara region. Our priorities are scholarly activity excellence and impact; innovation, economic development, and community engagement; access and equity; and innovation in teaching and learning excellence. We have a particular focus on understanding, working with, and serving underserved and equity-deserving populations.
Our students have felt warmly welcomed by the people of Niagara in all municipalities. We appreciate the support of community members, leaders, and healthcare workers who see the importance of local teaching to ensure high-quality care for all residents of Niagara. Our campus is enthusiastically supported and sustained by a wide range of Niagara physicians who share their expertise and wisdom with our students. The presence of our campus has also allowed us to recruit high-quality physicians with a range of specialties and experience who have enhanced the health care available within Niagara
We hope you will explore our website and discover Niagara’s local medical teaching, research, and innovation initiatives, along with our inter-professional collaborations with Brock University, Niagara College, Niagara Heath, and other community partners.
We warmly welcome you to visit us at the Niagara Regional Campus where we are committed to excellence for our students, our faculty, and our healthcare community.

The Niagara Region consists of 12 distinct and vibrant communities, all within a short drive from one another. They range from cities, urban in style and attitude, to towns and villages, rural and relaxed in nature, with each offering its own unique choice of recreational and educational opportunities. Joined to New York State by four international bridges, Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge and Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, Niagara, Canada is minutes from Buffalo, NY and a ninety-minute drive from Toronto.

Also known as “The Garden City”, the city ensures quality of life enhanced through unique festivals, historical sites, cultural attractions, authentic wine and culinary experiences.
The Town Of Grimsby is the personification of a small town. Its quiet, tree-lined avenues, its rural area, the natural Niagara Escarpment which winds through the town’s centre, the beaches on the shores of Lake Ontario, and its many parks define “home” to the town’s 27,000 people. Visitors come to Grimsby Beach to enjoy the Gingerbread houses that are affectionately painted by owners in bright colours. Grimsby is home to West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, a site of Hamilton Health Sciences, and construction is ongoing to build a new hospital to serve this growing community.
Town of Lincoln is located in the heart of Niagara region, with one of the most diverse economies in Niagara. Lincoln encompasses the communities of Beamsville, Vineland, Jordan, Campden, Tintern, and Rockway. When the Niagara GO train isn’t available, you can jump on the Lakeshore West GO train to Burlington and transfer to GO Bus Route 12 to get to Niagara. This will drop you off at the Niagara Falls Bus Terminal, across the street from the Niagara Falls Train Station.
Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft services are offered in the region. Please note, that these services may not be widely available in the region, but are available in SOME parts of the region.
Owning or having access to a vehicle will be necessary to be able to fully participate in the program, particularly in the varied clinical opportunities across the region. Given the limited inter-city transit, it may be difficult to navigate (especially with call shifts, etc.) if you do not have a vehicle.
Every year our current medical students advertise housing opportunities through the Facebook group for incoming students. A link to the group page will be shared via a welcome email from the O-Week team.
Upper-year colleagues can also be a resource to find housing. May students live in the same buildings/areas in St. Catharines and are an excellent resource for incoming students.

Waterloo Regional Campus (WRC)
Welcome Address from Dr. Margo Mountjoy
Welcome to the Waterloo Regional Campus (WRC); McMaster’s first fully distributed site for medical education.
Since opening our doors in 2007, the initial dreams that fostered an environment welcoming of community medical education, the vision of a unique partnership between McMaster University and the University of Waterloo, and the commitment to address health human resource shortages have yielded an amazing opportunity for aspiring physicians to become our students.
The communities of Waterloo-Wellington have demonstrated their leadership in enabling the educational mission. The success and sustainability of this initiative are clearly due to the commitment of local physicians and allied health professionals who willingly share their expertise and wisdom with our students.
Our learners include not only our Undergraduate MD students but also postgraduate trainees in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry. The wealth of local experience, grounded in our commitment to community training, provides access to unique educational opportunities.
Students at the Waterloo Regional Campus also have the unique experience of living and learning in one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. WRC is situated in Canada’s leading technology ecosystem and students are exposed to cutting-edge advances in medical technology and have the opportunity to pursue their own innovative ideas.
Explore our website for information about our local educational programs, opportunities to participate in our educational mission as well as our community initiatives, resources and activities.
Come join us at the Waterloo Regional Campus where our goal is to “engage, equip, and empower”!

The Waterloo Region is a mid-sized community located in the heart of southwestern Ontario’s greenbelt. This region offers three cities that offer their own unique attractions.
The City of Waterloo is home to two of the highest-ranked universities in the country. Uptown Waterloo is a thriving urban center with award-winning architecture, unique shops, and fantastic restaurants. Due to the close proximity of the City of Kitchener to Waterloo, the two together are often referred to as the “Twin Cities”.
The City of Kitchener, the Region’s largest city, is a hub of urban activity. Kitchener is an innovative, caring, and vibrant city and a place for everyone. The city is where beautiful brick factories have been transformed into condos that flank a modern light rail system. Kitchener is also a City of the Future, anchored by Canada’s Innovation Corridor, and its startup density is second only to Silicon Valley. Kitchener is famous for Canada’s largest Bavarian Festival, Oktoberfest, held over nine days in the twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo.
Kitchener-Waterloo is steeped in the Mennonite culture with one of the best farmers’ markets in the province, St. Jacob. The region is one of the provinces’ leading tech hubs with Google Canada’s Waterloo-based engineering headquarters, just at the Waterloo Regional Campus’ backyard, and the University of Waterloo’s Velocity Incubator, which equips and guides founders to build companies that scale at the earliest stages of business building.
Waterloo-Wellington Region is a combination of several cities and many rural communities. Due to the growing technology sector, Waterloo Region is also one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. Whether or not you choose to make the Waterloo Region your home, between Medical Foundations and Clerkship, you will get to know these communities well.
The City of Cambridge forms communities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler, and Blair to make up the current city of Cambridge. Cambridge is a modern city with a rich architectural heritage still clearly seen today. Cambridge is now the second largest community within Waterloo Region, partly due to their strong economy and culture. Cambridge is famous for the filming location of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
The City of Guelph has an unmistakable identity, also known as “The Royal City”, named after one of the family names of the British royal family. From its booming craft beer scene, and a vast array of independent eateries, Guelph is a city to be savored. Guelph is one of Canada’s largest cities that relies entirely on groundwater for its drinking water supply. Guelph has 1000 hectares of parks and open space with over 70km of trails.
Surrounding peaceful rural landscape, comprising the townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot, and Woolwich, in addition to Wellington North, Elora, and Fergus. These distinct towns and historic communities as well as farms offer maple syrup, apple butter, cheese, and Mennonite furniture and quilts.
Many points in the area have easy access off the 401 which leads to beautiful rural rolling hills, conservation area hiking, and a range of farm gate experiences. The villages provide respite to the traveler with opportunities to rest, relax and enjoy specialty retail.
To learn more about what these regions offer, visit:
Grand River Transit (GRT) offers transit services in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Elmira, St. Jacobs and New Hamburg. This system includes the ION light rail system. To plan your route, use the GRT trip planner.
GO Transit has a Kitchener station, which is a railway station located slightly to the northeast of downtown Kitchener at 126 Weber Street East, near the corner of Victoria Street. The GO Transit operates a train from Kitchener GO to Toronto Union Station every 4 hours. Via Rail also services this route twice daily.
Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft services are offered in the region.
Owning or having access to a vehicle can be beneficial for the students’ learner experience at all three McMaster campuses.
